The Winter Solstice Celebrations With Meditations, Decorations And Incense

Once again the Western World prepares to celebrate the Winter Solstice, which usually falls around the 21st December.

This is a magical time of the year and throughout the ages of mankind religions have gravitated toward this date to hold major ceremonies, celebrations and sacred observations.

Rock Crusher

Our modern age strangely sees us returning to the age-old customs of noting and paying respect to the sacred cycles of nature and the part we play in it, for we are intrinsically tied to these cycles of nature whether we like to admit it or not, influenced by the stages of the moon with its ebb and flow of energy. The sun ‘ the life giver ‘ marks the days of death and decay back into regeneration and growth. None of us that live on this planet can escape Mother Nature, the Goddess and her womb, or Father Time, the God and his creation of all life from the elements. Light and dark, all is one, all religion, all life blessed be!

The Winter Solstice Celebrations With Meditations, Decorations And Incense

RETURN OF THE SUN/SON!

Winter Solstice is the shortest day and the longest night of the year. It marks the gradual return of the sun and signifies birth when new seeds of life will spring forth. Similarly, Christianity uses this time of year to mark the birth of the son, signifying life eternal for all who partake of the light and become the body of Christ.

A good way to remember this special Solstice is, as the hours of daylight grow, so too, we can let our inner light of understanding, love and intuitions grow. Allowing both the dark and the light to resonate within us, for it is part of us and we can practice new beginnings of unity, compassion, empathy and global love.

PREPARE FOR THE WINTER SOLSTICE

Spend the Solstice in candlelight, meditation, reflection and look forward to new dawn. Prepare some seasonal incense and an appropriate meditation for the magical night of dreams ahead. Decorate your home with the colors of winter; white to represent the winter snow, dark green winter foliage, red winter berries and fruits, gold to represent the returning energy of the sun and silver for the delicate frost that settles all around at this cold time of year. A Winter Solstice incense blend:

Fill A heatproof bowl with about an inch of sand or salt. Metals, stone & ceramics are ideal that have feet to hold them safely above a surface, or you can buy purpose made incense burners. Beware of hot ash falling when the incense burns, keep safe. Prepare by crushing the ingredients together.

CITRUS SOLSTICE

1 tbsp dried Orange Peel, 1 tbsp dried Grapefruit Peel, 1 tbsp dried Lemon Peel, 1 tbsp dried Tangerine Peel, 1 tsp Orange extract, 1 tsp Lemon extract.

WINTER SOLSTICE

One part Pine Needles, One part Cinnamon, One part Apple Rine, One part Myrrh, One part Frankincense

Experiment and find a blend you like!

SEVEN REFLECTIONS WINTER SOLSTICE MEDITATION;

There is an Old Russian divination that took place on the evening of Winter Solstice where – usually a young lady – would set up two mirrors and two candles into a position that they would reflect each other. One should then peer into one of the mirrors and seek the seventh reflection, where she would catch a glimpse of her future or her one true love!

Find a comfortable place where you are least likely to be disturbed. Get your mirrors and candles ready, be sure to position them facing each other with the candles reflecting in each – use a stable, fireproof surface. Please take care that you cannot fall into the mirrors or candles as meditation can have a very hypnotic effect! Position them safely & far enough away.

You should sit facing the mirrors so that you can see into either mirror with the reflection of the other, if in a chair sit with your feet flat on the floor or sit in your usual meditation position. Sit upright but comfortable. Try not to hunch as this is not a relaxing position. Rest your hands lightly on your lap. Start the sound session.

First, concentrate yourself fully on the following breathing technique (do this about five – ten times, you don’t have to count ‘ do what feels right);

Breathe in deeply, expanding your abdomen to fill your lungs. Hold then very slowly let the breath out all the way until your lungs are empty.

Now begin to look into one of the mirrors, whichever one is up to you, search for the seventh reflection. After a while the image may change in the mirror, other faces may be seen or other images. Allow your mind to go along with the experience and always write the details in a diary immediately afterwards – this is for later reflection and things may make sense later that were not obvious at the time.

THE LAWS OF ATTRACTION MEDITATION

Before beginning the meditation, read the following reading I personally got during meditation regarding ‘THE LAWS OF ATTRACTION’ and try to understand the message contained within.

“Every negative word, deed, glance, thought, and action will come back to you. It is the indisputable law, the law of attraction. If you play with it, study this in earnest, you will find it, without doubt, to be true.

Imaging you are communicating with the physical world via a mirror. The person who stares back at you is the equivalent of every other person in the world. Frown at the person in the mirror, the person frowns back at you. Become angry at the person, see what comes back to you, look at the anger on that face and look into the eyes. How does that make you feel ‘ good? Bad? Imagine a child being confronted with that face, those eyes, that anger. Imagine if that small child was you!

Smile and you receive the same, laugh and the image laughs with you. This is how we create our world, by reflection. This is a warning so don’t discard it. Keep it with you and discover it!

But what if you are a child? You didn’t yet throw anything into the water to cause a ripple. You were born in innocence! No! You chose to be a victim for a short time. You agreed in your ancient wisdom to become the effect of a cause and those who peer into the mirror will see you. Your reflection will call to action better judgment, better discernment and a better future for all.”

NOW, get your mirror ready and find a comfortable place where you are least likely to be disturbed. You should sit in a chair facing the mirror with your feet flat on the floor. Sit upright but comfortable. Try not to hunch as this is not a relaxing position. Rest your hands lightly on your lap. Start the sound session.

First, concentrate yourself fully on the following breathing technique (do this about five – ten times, you don’t have to count ‘ do what feels right);

Breathe in deeply, expanding your abdomen to fill your lungs. Hold then very slowly let the breath out all the way until your lungs are empty. Keep your breathing deep and regular and begin to stare at your reflection in the mirror, focusing on your eyes. Imagine that every other person in the world reflects the image that stares back at you.

Notice the expression, smiles, frowns, anger, study what comes back at you through the mirror.

Now allow yourself to absorb the powerful sounds and simply stare at the mirror. After a while the image may change, other faces may be seen or other images. Allow your mind to go along with the experience and write the details in a diary immediately afterwards Allow yourself to adjust when your meditation finishes and drink a fresh glass of water.

Roll Away the Stone

Sisyphus does not usually tread the dusty streets of Jerusalem. He has never appeared in a Paschal reading, nor was he ever mentioned in an Easter sermon.

But this Easter, I thought of him. That ancient man of Grecian myth, forever doomed to roll the stone of his judgment up the hill, forever doomed to watch it slip from his grasp and tumble to the bottom, just as he struggled to reach the crest.

Rock Crusher

A man without hope. A man without a future.

Roll Away the Stone

I pictured him in my mind: hoary with the eternal passing of time, his back bent and hunched and broken from the weight of the stone. His hands roughened and bleeding from scraping against the unfeeling rock. His clothing torn, dirtied, bloodied. But most of all, his face. The helpless look of an immortal soul. The haunted, desperate emptiness in his eyes. Trapped. Voiceless. Hopeless.

Do you know that look? Have you felt that burning, aching pain?

I know that stone. I have rolled it before me, in different shapes and guises, many times. The stone is my sin. My judgment. The crushing weight of knowing that I failed … failed my Lord and myself worse than I ever imagined possible. Failed repeatedly. Failed ignominiously. Failed completely.

I condemn myself to rolling that stone before me. I reproach myself day and night for the wickedness, ignorance, or willfulness which led me in the broad path of destruction. I curse my shortsightedness; my blindness.

And the longer I roll that stone before me, the deeper the hurts run.

I question my worth before God. My ability to accomplish anything for him. I doubt that I can make wise decisions … or perhaps any decisions at all.

My days and nights run together in endless misery. Purpose is gone. Dreams are crushed. Hope is destroyed, trodden down beneath my aching feet.

I long to reach God. To come before him once again. So I push the stone before me … inch by inch, punishing myself in order to appease what I believe to be his wrath, striving to gain in my own strength the right to stand before him.

And the stone slips.

I watch Sisyphus in my mind’s eye. Watch as the stone rolls down the steep hill, gaining momentum as it goes.

His frame trembles with despair. His back, though temporarily not burdened, is still bent. His limbs are crooked from long days and nights, weeks and months, of straining against the stone. His crabbed figure, a tormented silhouette, begins its aching descent down the hill.

I feel for him. I feel with him. In that moment, I am he. I, too, have been grotesquely distorted and tortured by the weight of my sin and my condemnation.

I watch as he makes his painstaking way down the hill. Over grass he cannot feel, beneath a flaming sky he cannot see. For his eyes are blinded. Turned in. Sightless.

The ground levels out, and his breathing grows less hoarse. It is easy to follow the track of the stone … a deep depression mars the way of its passing.

He stops suddenly, with a sharp intake of breath. The track terminates at the mouth of a cave. But the stone is so large, it could not have gone in it … yet it is not there. His questioning gaze scans the surroundings uneasily.

And his eyes find the stone. Rolled to the side of the tomb.

The stone has been rolled away.

Rolled away, by a hand not his own.

Set to rest, by an authority above his own.

And a voice from behind him calls his name – my name – and I whirl with new strength and joy to see the One who has rolled away the stone.

Entrepreneurs – If You Don’t Fail You Will Never Succeed

If you are an entrepreneur and you might be going through some tough times, or you might even be thinking of starting your own business, but you are afraid, well read on to find out the truth of entrepreneurship and how you can win at this exciting game.

Many people that want to start a business go into thinking that they need to be as safe as they can be. Well, safe is for second place and safe is not what wins in the marketplace. Every single entrepreneur on earth has faced some amazing set-backs. They have made some terrible mistakes and they have gone through hell to get to where they are today. That’s the whole point, survival. Survival is how the business world separates the winners from the losers and how you too can get what you want.

Rock Crusher

The reason that entrepreneurs must fail is that they are innovative. New ideas and solutions to problems are the ones that win. If you are not innovative, you are playing it safe. If you are playing it safe you are not failing. If you are not failing then you will never succeed. Sounds weird, I know, but think about it. Every single successful person out there has a story to tell. They have all been through the ringer and made it out the other side, because they didn’t give up.

Entrepreneurs – If You Don’t Fail You Will Never Succeed

If you adopt this no-quit attitude you can accomplish anything. Your entrepreneurial journey is going to be wrought with a big old pile of failure, with a little disaster thrown in and some financial worries sprinkled on top. It’s all part of the game.

Instead of shying away from failure, welcome it as a stepping stone on your way to success. Assume that you will have at least 2 major, life-crushing setbacks on your journey and at least 20 semi-major failures before you make it. Also assume that you need to spend 10,000 hours on your business before it really takes off. Yes, 10,000. So, look at this time window, and the amount of failures as a checklist. When they come, know that they have to come and say “alright! here’s number one, 19 more to go.” At the time of course you may not feel that way, but understand that everyone has to go through it, even the billionaire 19 year-old with the new web site. The best thing you can do for yourself is to fail fast and get back on the horse. You can have anything you want in life that way.

Two-Hearted Killer (A Short Vietnam War Sketch, in Cam Ranh Bay, and an Attack)

(Interjectory background) This story takes place in Can Ranh Bay, Vietnam, 1971; it is a deep water bay in the province of Khanh Hoa, inlet of the South China Sea, 180-miles northeast of Saigon. It is considered a significant military base; the Navy, Air Force and Army are stationed there in great numbers. In the past one-hundred years it has been considered a strategic point in the providing port for Military champignons, supplying, and other military adventures. The Japanese have used in the early 1940s to invade Malaysia, the United States as early as 1944, used it as a task force to destroy Japanese facilities thereabouts. In 1964 (to the end of the war in 1975), the Seventh Fleet took up resonance there until the Army took over completely in about 1972, and the Russians used it for twenty-fives years, in the seventies to the nineties, and although there has not been a lot of conflict at Cam Ranh Bay, considered at times to have been a resting area for the US Infantry, away from combat, it has also been a storage area of mentions, which the Viet Cong has on occasion, infiltrated and took large sums of arms to re-supply their troops. In addition, in 1969, and 1971, there were attacks on Cam Ranh, this is a story that involves one of those attacks, in which the author was involved.

Two-hearted Killer

Chapter One

Two-Hearted Killer (A Short Vietnam War Sketch, in Cam Ranh Bay, and an Attack)

“Why did you come to Vietnam to fight?” said Frenchie.

“I suppose at first it was for an ideal,” said Chick Evens.

“Will your ideal save you if you get shot?”

“So I have to fight well, and shoot straight.”

“I don’t believe anything I hear, and I don’t believe in luck, but I am like you, I have to do what I’m supposing to do, to survive, for my husband, for my duty.”

“I know, husbands are to be obeyed, and so are Army Officers, and so are the Congressmen in the United States to the President of the United States, it all comes from the top.”

(The wind opens the door, and it shuts again.)

“Are my friends, those sleeping here in the hooch, your customers also?”

“The Buck Sergeant is. He gets very ugly when he is drunk.”

“I know, I had it out with him a few weeks ago, a fight to the death almost. The other two are alright.”

“When you put on your uniform, you are a soldier, and when I put on my makeup and come here, I am working for my ideal, just like you.”

“You’re awfully pretty,” remarked Evens.

“You have nice manners for a soldier,” said Frenchie. “Darling, kiss me!”

“If I do, we stop talking then. I like boozing, and talking and smoking all at the same time.”

“Really?” she commented “whatever you like dear.” Adding, “I read in a book, American men try to get the woman he is interested is, into bed with boozing it up, that’s silly, he and she can’t do a thing drunk.”

“I suppose your right, but you’re a serious lover, Americans are not, sex is like having breakfast, good, and then goodbye.”

“Do you want some more breakfast?” (She kisses him.)

“What do you want me to do?” Evens asked.

“Lift my dress up over my shoulders, I don’t want to get it wrinkled anymore than I have to, this bed is so small.”

“Right,” (he does) “now what?”

“Let’s do the whole thing all over again, make love.”

“Very well, Frenchie, but I hope I don’t go to sleep on you.” (They both start laughing, to the point of almost choking.)

“Twice in one night is too much!” said Evens.

“You owe me six-dollars, remember I’ll collect on payday,” says Frenchie with a smile. Evens drop back down in bed.)

“How long you been in the Army?”

“I got three months to go, been in for 21-months.”

(He looks for the bottle of rice wine they had been drinking, finds it alongside his bed, there is a few drops left, he holds it up in the air, lets the wine dribble into his mouth, it is a little more the than what he thought left in the bottle, and it dribbles on his chin.)

“I know you only charge me a little compared to the rest of the guys, and on credit, but you sleep here every time you come around this company area, and you know you’re safe with me. Here give me your money, I’ll put it under my pillow, pick it up tomorrow morning. Too late to go back to the village now, you’ll be raped by either the drunken GI’s walking about, or the cowboys, those teenage gangsters at the village.”

“Thank you corporal, I was hoping you’d ask me to stay the night, and hide my money for me, like last time.”

(She hands him her money it is in a fat roll, with a piece of cloth tied around it.)

“Wow, this is a lot of dough, how much?”

“Five-hundred dollars.”

“In one night?”

“I charge the other soldiers between ten and twenty-five dollars.”

“Thanks,” said Evens, “come on, we better go to sleep, my First Sergeant checks out the hooch and if he finds you here, there can be problems, although he has his share of girls in his personal den.”

“You never did tell me about any of the people you killed in war.”

“No, please don’t ask:”

(You can hear it starting to rain outside the hooch, Chick Evens gets up and walks over to the door, shuts it, ties it shut with a loose string. And quietly walks back to his bed. Frenchie, a beautiful whore, half French and Vietnamese, reaches under Evens’ bed, finds another bottle of Japanese Rice Wine, and fines the corkscrew and opens the bottle.)

“Look what I found,” she tells Evens.

“Forgot, I had another one there.”

“What’s the matter, dear?”

“You look serious again; I hope I don’t have to pay you -dollars on payday.” (And they both start laughing.)

“Move over, let me drink it sitting up.” (She hands him the bottle.)

“I can’t ever talk to anyone about war, they never tell me a thing, I want to know, darling you tell me, it’s just a hang-up. There are two-hundred thousand American soldiers here, and not one will tell me a thing. Why?”

“Don’t be silly, war is no game.”

“But I want to know, know something, anything about war, not just that American GI’s want sex now and then.”

“Two months ago, I was in Saigon, at a hotel, other Americans there, some Vietcong, you know how they dress, just like you and the South Vietnamese Army, you can’t tell who is who, an American soldier is in his room laying on his bed, they come in, three of them, and the boy starts to cry, he sees their AK-47s, the Russian made rifles, and they shoot, I hear the shots, and the cry, and I run to his room, he’s a friend, opening the door, they are jumping outside the window; the filthy bastards, they shot his head almost off his neck. Not one bullet, twenty bullets. That my dear is what you call a dead man; he was supposed to come to Cam Ranh Bay with me, but somebody shot him first. We were in the bush together for six months.”

“Who shot him?” she asked.

“Lady you’re in a war zone, whoever, that is who. Hurry up and drink what you want and give me the bottle.”

(He commences to lie back in the bed.)

“Sorry I had you bring it up…!”

(In a tired voice) “Don’t ask me anything else please. I don’t want to remember.”

“I’d like to ask you one more thing, and you don’t have to pay me the .00 dollars you owe me so far.”

“Yes.”

“Do you think people like shooting people for the heck of it? I mean, when they get used to killing do they like to kill more?”

“Yeah, I think they do. The sergeant I got in a fight with here, signed up six times to stay in Vietnam, to kill more…he’s got the bug to kill.”

“Truly?” she asked.

“How do you know?”

“Go ask him, I’ll wake him up for you. Plus I know plenty guys like him.”

“Oh no, I’m scared of him.”

“What’s his name?”

“I don’t know, I can’t remember off hand, but I call him The Crusher, he looks like a wrestler in Minnesota I once saw, went to a wrestling match and saw him fight, both the Sergeant and the real Crusher were muscle-bound, but the Sergeant has no sense.”

“Did you kill anybody?” (Evens starts to choke, takes another drink of wine.)

“On guard duty once, I killed an American who wouldn’t yield, the VC made him approach me with a hand-grenade in his hand, ready to throw it, and they were watching him from the undergrowth, ready to shoot him if he didn’t, it was him or I, it was in the middle of the night, no one else around. I shot him and then into the shrubbery; killed three in the bushes. You satisfied now?”

“Well, I guess nobody understands the war, but you’re all here, are you ever going to write about me and the war?”

“Someday I’d like to put it down in writing, but I don’t know how to yet.”

“If you ever do will you write nice things about me, not how I danced with your friends last time I saw you, remember I danced naked, and did all those things?”

“Frenchie, you made everyone happy, I’ll never forget you, if I do write about you, it will be with the truth, and, well, with a certain amount of thanks and fatigue.” (She laughed.)

“When you write, I wish you a lot of luck!”

“Why did they shoot your friend?”

“I think by mistake, and when they saw their mistake, they wanted to set an example so other GI’s would be fearful of the enemy. They weren’t awfully efficient; we all kill a lot of people over here, and we shouldn’t kill. The trouble is, people put us in harms way, and it becomes them or us, somebody ten-thousand miles away, who don’t have to deal with this dilemma. Politicians, big industry, that is what it is all about, and they get boys like me, men I should say, young men with ideals, and they never watch us slobber our lives away, if they did, they may have some pity on us, and stop such foolish wars like this.”

“Yes. I suppose you’re right.”

“You and I could die alright, we don’t ask one another to do something we’re not willing to do ourselves, but up there in Washington, they sort us out by classes, who are the dispensable.” (Frenchie shakes her head.)

“They are the real killers, right Evens?” (The rain outside is pouring down like cats and dogs, making noise against the door.)

“After killing for six bloody months, my girl, in this country, you get sucked in on all sides, you don’t know who to trust, what is right and wrong, you question your values, and the folks you once believed in. It’s all too bloody much.”

“We ought to go to sleep,” said Frenchie.

“Yes, I’m tired also.”

“That’s right, let’s just close our eyes here, and go to sleep.”

(They both close their eyes; she reopens her’s, looks towards Evens.)

“You sleeping?” she asks. (Evens, no response, she whispers :) “I hope you write nice things about me,” and closes her eyes again, and falls to sleep.

ViÇt ngï: attack!

Chapter Two

“Cái th±ng chÓng em nó ch³ng ra gì,” said Frenchie.

“I know what that means, said Evens.

“No you don’t,” said Frenchie, “and my name is Mai, not Frenchie,” she commented, “and my ancestors were Muong, Cambodian, and Chinese, Ông ¥y. You know what Ông ¥y means?”

“I wish you’d let me sleep, stop waking me up, I speak as good ViÇt ngï (Vietnamese) as you, or just about as well as you. It means ‘that husband of mine, he is good for nothing,’ and then you referred to me as sir, and I’m not a sir I’m a corporal.”

You really do understand, don’t you?” said Mia.

“Yes ChË ¥y (young lady)” said Corporal Evens.

“So all this time you’ve been fooling those around you?”

“Just like you, who just told me your name, Mia? I still haven’t mastered the vowels, and their pronunciation with that inherent tone to them.”

“I teach you?”

“I wish I could teach you to go to sleep and stay sleeping, what time is it?”

Mia looked at her watch, “It 2:00 a.m.” she said.

“By god, don’t you Vietnamese women ever sleep? Be a good girl and let me go back to sleep?”

“You just need to learn the pitch in the language that is kind of the loudness, if you know what I mean?”

“You have to have an ear for that, and that takes too long, I’ll be long gone by then I hope.”

“Why do you GI’s call us gooks?”

“It’s just a way to dehumanize you, so we can kill you, make you less than human, so when we pull the trigger, we think we’re killing rat, not a human being.”

“Oh, I never know why you call that to us. Am I gook?”

“Mia and me have no more bí mt, what will we talk about now?”

“This is not true, I do have secrets, I will not tell you, and I know you have more secrets, but sometimes it is good to keep them to oneself.”

“Gosh, I wonder sometimes why I like you!” said Evens.

“I wonder why I like you, too, darling. It is not very wise, really. You will go, and I will stay, and we will think of each other for forty-years, I wonder what she is doing, I wonder what he is doing, and we old, and never know.”

(They both hear foot steps walking by the door, they stop.)

“Who is that, Corporal?” asked Mia.

“The CQ, he checks things out, he may come in hear, I think he heard us, so he may give us his blessing, and walk on by, if not you will have to go.”

“Does he ever come in the hooch?”

“He never does really, I wished he’d not come tonight.”

“He won’t. He likes you like me.”

“I hope not,” said Evens, with a chuckle.

Sergeant Thompson looks through the door, Mia, hides under the covers, How’re you, very well, Corporal Evens?” he asks. He sees all is well, gives the corporal a smile, “thought I heard something, maybe you had some kind of sort you aren’t supposed to have; looks like everything is all right thought: everybody absolutely comfortable?”

“Everybody’s marvelous,” said Evens.

“Well, don’t talk to yourself so loud, you’ll wake up your comrades.”

“Sure enough, Sergeant.” (And he left walking back to the Orderly Room to make out paperwork that all was well on his shift.)

“Tell me what happened last month when I was gone back to see my family in Cambodia, I hear there was an attack?” asked Mia.

“If I do, then will you let me sleep? I wish you’d have been here, you like the action.”

“Damn that electric, everything’s out, it does that every other night, under the bed are some candles, give me the box ok?”

Mia rolled over in the bed and stretched her arm under it, feeling for the box, brings it up, and hands it to Evens, Evens pulls out a short fat candle, lights it, puts it on a wooden crate, used for fruit, he got from the mess hall.

“I was, chía hoang ” (pregnant out of wedlock)” said Mia.

“Is that why your husband makes you do what you do?”

“He is old man, and marries me when I was sixteen years old.”

“I hope they fix the electricity.” (She reaches for the wine, opens the top, by unscrewing it, and drinks some.)

“He likes to drink a little like you, he just a poor little man, it is a shame he get old.”

“Of course, Mia.”

“I hope this gives you pleasure, it doesn’t me.”

“But I want to know about war, I know you are very brave man.”

“I know I am, every time there is a conflict, or combat, or mission I have to remind myself of that, sometimes even convince myself…so far so good.”

“Say, Corporal Evens, this third bottle I screwed open. Why?”

“Cheap wine, that’s why, from America. So now I have to call you Mia, maybe I can put a hyphen in the middle and call you Frenchie-Mia?”

“You are funny again. Come on, tell me what happened.”

“There’s some left in the second bottle, finish that first, even if it’s only a few drops.” She reaches for the other bottle, puts the stem in her mouth and drops her head backwards, and takes one small swallow.

“Very little,” she remarks, and grabs the second bottle, and takes a gulp.

“And what did you do when the action started, corporal?”

“You’re sure you want to know?”

“I let you sleep if you tell me.”

(Evens and Mia, can here the man called Crusher snoring.)

They both sit back in the bed. She grabs his hands as if the story is going to be spellbinding. He swats a few flies that are pestering him. A cockroach falls threw a hole in the tin ceiling of the hooch onto Evens’ forehead, it is as long as his index finger, and as thick, it bites him, he swats it away.

“Damn bugs. I swear they’re all over tonight; flies, cockroaches and you.”

“Well, Mia-”he began, “it all started around 11:00 p.m., suddenly at night, 107 mm rockets hit the three ammo dumps, Charlie dump was empty, Alpha dump was not, and the Air Force dump with up like an atomic bomb, and they hit all across the bay, slamming down everywhere, the Viet Cong came down from the hills, and nobody had rifles in their hands ready to do a thing, they were all in the arms room, and I opened it, while Charlie (the enemy) ran around all these company areas into the medical clinic and orderly rooms, places they knew people were helpless, and everyone know quiet Cam Ranh Bay, seldom gets hit, it is more a safe zone in Vietnam, so no one was prepared and 19-soldiers got killed, one in the Air Force Ammo Dump, and the sappers ((commandos)(PAVN or Viet Cong)) were throwing satchel charges everywhere, everywhichway (demolition devices like a charge of dynamite, C-4 plastic, a carrying devise like a bag, often times with an triggering mechanism; customized).

They were fast and ready, Crusher was sleeping, the orderly room clerk had no gun, and someone was trying to get through the window of the orderly room, and the CQ, knew it wasn’t an American solider, so he ran and hid behind the water tank. I shot several round from my magazine, and gave several rifles out, but no one know were the gunners were in the hills, so the infantry we have here, me among the few, couldn’t run after them, I think they had some electric devises on those guns they fired from the hills. Actually, we had just finished watching a movie on the outdoor amphitheater. The MP’s (Military Police) next to this company weren’t even prepared. Eleven of us had to go out and search Alpha Dump for Charlie, the rest of the soldiers, about 140, were too high on dope or drunk to fight. Rockets kept coming in until morning, sporadically.”

“Very good, you are lucky,” said Mia.

No. I am not lucky, the hell with luck,” the Corporal took another drink of the wine, “They beat us that day, they truly beat us.”

“Life is like that, we must now make plans about other things.”

“The world for Americans is very small, for us, it is very big.”

Evens noticed how pleasant it still was to be with her, he’d miss her, he knew that, and he fell to sleep. She let him sleep, said in a whisper as she got out of bed, it was 4:30 p.m., taking her money from under the pillow, “You are very brave corporal, and lucky, I’ll bring your luck with me.” She looked at him, he was handsome. Up the road, the young woman was almost sleepwalking back to her village down by the South China Sea, she was so tired, but she didn’t want to get him in trouble in the morning. She knew now he was dreaming about the battle they had talked about because he was saying things to his male companions they only say in battles.

Preventive Vs Predictive Maintenance

There are 3 types of Maintenance. Corrective, Preventive and Predictive Maintenance. All differ considerably, and are used in different situations. Corrective Maintenance involves doing nothing until something fails. For example, you purchase a new car and drive it until something breaks. It’s common sense that doing some minor maintenance at scheduled intervals is going to increase the lifespan of your vehicle, which is why we have services on our cars.

Preventive Maintenance is exactly this; pre determined schedules of maintenance that happen regardless of the equipments condition. Going back to the vehicle example, Preventive Maintenance includes regular inspections of fluids, safety checks and draining the necessary oils and filling them back up with new oil. By doing this, problems are identified before they worsen, and the fixes are minor. This usually translates to less costs, and the vehicle life is significantly extended. In the industrial world, everything from pumps through to conveyors, mills and crushers have preventive maintenance scheduled. This ensures that problems are picked up early and maintenance can be arranged to replace any worn parts before failure occurs.

Rock Crusher

Preventive maintenance isn’t cheap, but over the lifetime of equipment it certainly pays off. In most applications, downtime is extremely expensive. By having the right preventive maintenance schedule in place downtime is limited, and therefore the cost of doing the maintenance in the first place is negligible. Maintenance has changed and evolved significantly over the last 10 years. Today, the most preferred way to do maintenance is predictive. Of course, some machines aren’t easy to do this on and I will explain this below.

Preventive Vs Predictive Maintenance

Like the name suggests, predictive maintenance involves predicting when a machine is going to fail. Now, I don’t mean that you pull a wand out and take a random guess – there are many different ways in which a machines condition can be monitored. These are known as condition monitoring, and include vibration analysis, oil analysis, thermal imaging and ultrasonic measurements. All of these are non destructive, fast and highly effective.

A lot of equipment in the industrial world has maintenance applied to it when it doesn’t need it. For example, pumps may be stripped down as part of a preventive maintenance schedule. If you were to find that the pump was in pristine condition, the maintenance was almost a waste of time. What if you could tell that the pump is in perfect condition without pulling it apart? By using vibration analysis, you can trend the vibrations and this will tell you the condition of the equipment. As rotational equipment wears it vibrates more, and this is easily identified. You can trend the vibration and watch it get worse, and plan maintenance when the equipment really needs it.

Each of the condition monitoring types mentioned above are specialised fields in themselves. If you want to improve the way your maintenance is done, I give you 2 pieces of advice. The first is to ensure you have a quality CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) and the second is to ensure that you are striving to implement predictive maintenance policies. These 2 suggestions will help point your maintenance in the right direction and ensure increased efficiency, moral and enjoyment in the maintenance departments.

Plant Spirit Shamanism – The Medicinal Plants of the Amazon Rainforest

Working with teacher plants is known as the ‘shaman’s diet’. The purpose of the diet is to prepare the body and nervous system for the powerful knowledge and expansion of consciousness given by teacher plants.

In everyday life, the mind creates the illusion that we are separate from reality, and thus protects us, like a veil, from experiencing the vastness of the universe. Access to the truth without preparation could be a radical shock to the system.

Rock Crusher

It offers a significant challenge for the rational Western mind to come to terms with the teacher plants, and a leap of imagination is required to incorporate the ‘other’ consciousness of the plant. The magical world to which we are transported by plants is not accessible through the verbal rational mind but through dream language or an expansion of the imagination. Thus dreams & our imaginative powers act like doorways during a plant diet and connect us with the plant spirit.

Plant Spirit Shamanism – The Medicinal Plants of the Amazon Rainforest

Some of the Medicinal Plants of the Amazon Rainforest.

o Mocura; taken orally or used in floral baths to raise energy, or take you out of a saladera (a run of bad luck, inertia, sense of not living to the full). This plant gives mental strength and you can feel its effects as also with ajosacha, both are varieties of garlic and have a penetrating aroma. Mental strength means it could be good to counter shyness, find one’s personal value or authority. Medicinal properties include asthma, bronchitis, reduction of fat and cholesterol. Another of its properties is that it burns of excess fat.

o Piñon Colorado; this plant has short lived effect after drinking but helps dreaming later on when you go to sleep. Piñon Colorado can also be worked with as a planta maestra (teacher plant). Medicinal properties include dealing with Insect bites and stings, vaginal infections, and bronchitis. It is possible to take the resin which is much stronger but toxic if too much ingested. The resin can be applied directly to the skin.

o Chirisanango; this plant is good for colds and arthritis and has the effect of heating up the body, so much so that the maestro advises a cold shower after each dose! This plant can be used in baths for good luck, and bring success to fishing, hunting etc. This planta maestra also makes possible for people to open up their heart to feel love for people and animals, and identify with other people as though brothers and sisters.

It grows mainly in the Upper Amazon and only a few restingas (high ground which never floods) in the Lower Amazon. The shamans say that plants connect us with nature because they take their nourishment directly from the earth, as well as the sun’s rays, the air. They allow us to know and recognize ourselves. A shaman must know this and must love his people to heal them. The gift of Chirisanango is self esteem i.e the ability to recognise ourselves.

The shamans say that this plant opens up the shamanic path, assuming that we are prepared to live under the rules of shamanism, to do this we need courage and no fear of extremes or negative & challenging circumstances. We need to understand what role we will play in society and have the heart of a warrior.

o Guayusa; It is good for excessive acidity and other problems in the stomach and bile. Also it is both energizing and relaxing at the same time and develops mental strength. This also has the most interesting effect of giving lucid dreams i.e when you are dreaming you are aware that you are dreaming. The plant is also known as the “watchman’s plant”, as even when sleeping you are aware of the outer physical surroundings.

On another personal note, I found the experience with this plant also to be quite incredible. I found that the usual boundary between sleeping and being awake to be more fluid than I had anticipated. Even now, sometime after taking the plant my dreams are more colourful, richer, and lucid than before. For those interested in ‘dreaming’ this is certainly the plant to explore.

o Ajo Sacha; An important planta maestra in the initiation of Amazonian shamans. Mental strength, acuity of mind, saladera (explained above), for ridding spells, self healing. Originally used to enhance hunting skills by covering up human smell with the garlic smell of Ajosacha.

On another personal note, I found my senses being altered and enhanced with this plant. I could zoom in and focus on sounds emanating from the rainforest, my sense of smell became sharper, and in some ineffable way I could tune into the breathing or rhythm of the rainforest. The sound of insects and birds was no longer a random phenomenon, these sounds became a rhythmic breath, rising and falling. No wonder that it is used for hunting as one’s sense are heightened in an incredible way.

o Icoja; A bark used for malaria, fever, an astringent, disinfectant for healing septic wounds. Used against Uta – a kind of leprosy found in the Amazon. Wounds are washed directly with this plant, and it is also used for an infectious disease (Pilagra) in children.

o Chanca piedra; Used for Kidney problems especially kidney stones (hence the name ‘stone crusher’), gall bladder, disinfectant. This is recognised as a gall bladder and liver tonic. It is also used for cleansing the urinary system and for dealing with intestinal parasites. This plant is only used for its many pharmaceutical properties, not a planta maestra per se.

o Sachamangua; This is a large single seeded fruit, which when you crush the fruit and squeeze the juice into the nose, it warms the area locally (it can sting a bit), and it is effective for curing sinusitis. It also helps the eyesight and restores visual acuity by relieving the pressure from the sinuses. You eliminate a lot of mucus and this gives relief. The fruit when ripe is normally eaten peeled or roasted, and is a little like the aguaje fruit, but for medicinal uses it must be green. It is also good for tired feet in an poultice. Taken orally it is useful for the liver when struggling with the digestion of fat, it is also a treatment for gases. Fungal spores in the nose can cause itching, rhinitis or allergy and Sachamangua is effective for this too. Athlete’s foot can also be treated with the dry powder, like talcum powder, prepared from this fruit.

o Cat’s Claw (una de gato); Cat’s Claw is a tropical vine that grows in rainforest. This vine gets its name from the small thorns at the base of the leaves, which looks like a cat’s claw. These claws enable the vine to attach itself around trees climbing to a heights up to 150 feet. The inner bark of this vine has been used for generations to treat inflammations, colds, viral infections, arthritis, and tumors.

Cat’s Claw can be used as tonic to boost the body’s immune system. And is considered by many as a ‘balancer’ returning the body’s functions to a healthy equilibrium. Its has anti-inflammatory and blood cleansing properties as well as being able to clean out the entire intestinal tract and therefore helps treat a wide array of digestive problems such as gastric ulcers, parasites, and dysentery.

From a psycho-spiritual, plant spirit, or shamanic perspective in which disease and illness can be initiated by a spiritual imbalance within a person causing the person to become de-spirited, or losing heart (in the West we would call this depression), it can restore this inner sacred union of spirit and physical body.

The medicinal properties of this plant are officially recognized by the Peruvian government and it is a protected (for export) plant. It is available widely in the west in capsule form. In the markets in Iquitos it is available in bark form, and many indigenous communities are increasingly cultivating this plant

o Boahuasca; Used to heal Cancer of the stomach and intestines and prolapses. Also used against Uta, and cancerous, malignant wounds. The shaman’s make an ointment from the ash and apply directly.

The underlying truth that is revealed in working with the plant spirit or consciousness is that we are not separate from the natural world. We perceive ourselves to be separate beings with our minds firmly embedded within our being (typically our head). The plants can show you that this way of being is an illusion and that we are all connected, all of us and everything else is a discrete element in the great universal field of consciousness. This is an area where the ancient knowledge of the peoples of the rainforest and modern quantum physics point in the very same direction, “Reality is an illusion, albeit a persistent one’ Albert Einstein.

Another way of seeing the shaman’s diet is that like the platitude ‘all roads lead to Rome’, all plants lead through different paths of experiences to the same place, i.e a deep and expanded understanding of one’s place in the world around us and a recognition of self as an intrinsic element of this.

The indigenous people of the Amazon see life as having enough purpose just as it is. Fulfillment comes from being in tune with the spirits so there is an abundance of fish, bananas, yucca for making masato (alcoholic beverage), and plenty of healthy children, in short, life is for being happy!

Basement Walls Waterproofing

Not long ago, I was contacted by a friend of mine regarding Basement walls Waterproofing. This was an extreme case, but I thought I would tell the story just to try and create awareness for damp sealing, and the problems it could cause.

Graham had a Chemist, and stayed in a flat above. There was a double garage for his and his wife’s cars behind the building, with access by means of a cement driveway, circling the shop. It was a three level building, with a basement storeroom below. Having being built four years ago, it was still considered new. The first hint that he needed basement water proofing, was when his wife had noticed that a dark patch had appeared on the farside wall.

Rock Crusher

Located across the road from the sea, it was first thought to be condensation. After working through a number of remedies, including a silicon sealant, membrane based damp seal, heaters and extractor fans, it was agreed to call for quotations. The source of the water ingress was diagnosed to be external. The driveway had to be lifted, (destroying it) and the soil excavated to reveal the basement walls. Health and safety meant shuttering had to be erected to hold back the excavated soil from collapsing back into the trench, before any of the work could be carried out.

Basement Walls Waterproofing

The basement storage room had to be emptied while the work was carried out and Grahams lounge became a store room for the chemist. This meant he could no longer come home, after a hard day’s work, and unwind by playing games in front of the TV. Instead he had to sit in the neighbourhood pub for two hours every night.

The site was left exposed for two weeks, to let the walls properly dry out. The remedy was to spray a polymer based product onto the exterior of the wall. The excavation was deepened, to build a catchment which was a trough filled with crusher stone, to accumulate future moisture. Pipes were then laid running along a trench (in places ten metres deep) to the nearest storm water drain.

It could have been a costly experience, both from loss of revenue, and the cost of the reinstatement. Luckily, the job was covered by the builder, who used it as an opportunity to train his new apprentices, but that never replaced the inconvenience incurred by Graham’s customers, doing their shopping on a construction site.

That was an extreme case. Depending on the degree of the ingress, and the symptoms, the solution will be apparent.

Two out of every ten people I know, choose to ignore, or live with damp problems, not realising the possible resultant damage. Ever see little patches of white powder appearing on your walls? We once decided to ignore damp symptoms, and ended up replacing the door frame, next to our bathroom. What a nightmare that was, not to mention the unnecessary expense.

You should continually be on the lookout for subtle changes, such as a discolouring of the wall or ceiling, little patches of white powder appearing, fungus growth, inside and outside. A sudden patch of green grass could be a leaky pipe. Look on the other side of the wall, or ceiling. See if you can spot the cause. The golden rule is as always, nip it in the bud.

I wish you every success.

Is The Motor Any Good On That New Project? – A Step by Step Guide to Diagnosing Engine Condition

You gave up that stack of Benjamins, and got a cool project to rescue from The Crusher. Now it’s time to see what you really have. Assuming you have a fresh battery and a starter that turns the engine we can begin.

Won’t Start?:

Engines need three elements to run: Fuel, spark and compression. Check for spark first. Pull any spark plug wire off of the distributor and spin the engine. It should arc a healthy spark when held within an inch of the connection at the distributor. If it doesn’t arc, it has ignition woes. Pull the distributor cap off and check the rotor/points to see if everything rotates when the engine cranks. It’s common on old cars for wires to break or corrode, if it still doesn’t spark after checking the connections it probably needs a coil.

Rock Crusher

Be sure the carb has fuel, or just squirt starting fluid in to be sure it has enough fuel to start after you verify spark. It should fire or at least partially fire at this point. This is assuming you have the plug wires correctly connected.

Is The Motor Any Good On That New Project? – A Step by Step Guide to Diagnosing Engine Condition

Check The Compression:

You need a compression gauge for this. They’re only about . Remove all spark plugs and start with the number 1 hole and turn the engine 7-10 times to get a good reading. Healthy numbers should be 140 to 150 lbs. The numbers can be much higher on high compression engines, 180 plus is common on those. The important point in compression readings is to have even readings among all cylinders. They should all be within 5 lbs of each other. If one cylinder is 15% or more under the others, it’s time to do a Wet Compression Test.

Wet Compression Test:

Squirt about 1/2 teaspoon of oil into the cylinder, then take another reading. This has a sealing effect on the piston rings and cylinder. If the compression numbers increase with this sealing effect, it’s likely worn piston rings/cylinder scoring. If the numbers stay low it’s likely a leaky valve. A machine shop can grind a valve seat for – 0. Worn rings require complete engine disassembly/rebuild.

Oil Pressure:

Adequate oil pressure is about 10 lbs for every 1000 rpm. It’s not unusual for some engines to have 5 lbs or less at idle. This isn’t as big a problem as it may seem, but you DO need to keep the oil level up to prevent bearing damage. Don’t let the oil level get low!! If you’re not going to beat the car down a drag strip, these low numbers which are common on worn engines isn’t a problem generally.

Timing Chain Inspection:

Remove the distributor cap to expose the rotor, and rock harmonic balancer back and forth with a socket/breaker bar. Excessive play should be clearly visible. This of course indicates a worn timing chain. The engine will still run with quite a bit of play, but performance will drop proportionally to the excess play.

Cam/Valvetrain Wear:

Pull the valve covers off and simply watch the rockers in motion at idle. A flat tappet will be fairly obvious. This isn’t an emergency usually, but it’s good to know the vitals and this is easy to check.

Helpful Tip:

To inspect rocker motion while the engine is running, it’s handy to have an old pair of valve covers to cut up. Cut the top face off to leave the base and sides, then bolt into place on the head, and you’ll have a valve cover with a big window to view the rockers. This keeps oil from running out and making a mess.

Ignition Timing:

Disconnect the vacuum advance and hit the timing mark with the timing light. A good setting is 8-10 degrees before top dead center (BTDC). To adjust timing, loosen the distributor clamp and simply rotate the distributor accordingly.

Vacuum Leaks:

These can be most easily checked by listening to the way the throttle transitions from open throttle to idle. If the engine stays at a high rpm after the throttle is closed to idle position, it’s usually because the engine is sucking air through an air leak in the intake tract. If the car won’t idle at a steady rpm this can also be the cause. If the car backfires when the throttle is opened, it can be a phasing problem between the vacuum/mechanical advance and the unmonitored intake charge through the vacuum leak. These are some symptoms of vacuum problems. Of course to remedy these problems, be sure the gaskets and vacuum hoses in the intake system are sealed.

These basic tests will give you a good idea about the health of your engine.

The Ring of Kerry – Top Driving Route in Ireland!

The ‘Ring of Kerry’ has become a major attraction with tour buses carrying eager visitors around the route every day. However, we recommend that the best way to see it, is to drive at your own pace (as the buses adhere to an itinerary, stopping at only some of the attractions).

By driving, you can adapt the trip to suit yourself, so you can stop where you want, and take in the fresh air and breathtaking scenery for as long as you like. It can be covered in a day by leaving early in the morning, but if you really want to take your time to explore it, then you won’t have any problem finding accommodation, as the route is lined with B&B’s.

Rock Crusher

So to get the best out of this trip, hire a car, get a road map, buckle up your seatbelt and off you go!

The Ring of Kerry – Top Driving Route in Ireland!

Firstly, it is advisable to start the Ring of Kerry in Killarney and travel the route in an anti-clockwise direction. The reason for this is that the route is narrow in parts so all the major coaches and buses travel in the one direction.

Leaving Killarney on the N72, you’ll find it hard to miss the McGillycuddy’s Reeks on your left, with the highest point in the range Carrantoohill, peaking at 3411ft. This is the highest mountain in Ireland!

At the base of this mountain range, lies the Gap of Dunloe, widely recognised as one of the most picturesque glaciated valleys in Europe and the home of the famous Kate Kearney’s Cottage (great spot for a pint and some food!).

Continue on the N72, and the first town you’ll come to is Killorglin. On the 10th, 11th and 12th of August each year, a very extraordinary festival takes place in this town involving a goat!

It is said that a goat once saved this town from invasion of the Cromwell’s troops, so each year a wild goat is taken from the mountains and placed high on a pedestal in the town (don’t worry he’s well looked after by animal welfare!). People flock from near and far to see the goat and enjoy the craic, music and drink which flows for the three solid days of Puck Fair!

Exit Killorglin on the N70 and follow directions for your next town, which is Glenbeigh. On your way here, you will see a little thatched village on your right hand side. This is the Kerry Bog Village and Museum, which gives a visual insight into the work and livelihood of people in Ireland during the 18th century. Afterwards, you can relax with a nice creamy pint at the Red Fox Inn and Restaurant, which is next-door to the bog village.

The road to Glenbeigh runs close to Caragh Lake, a fisherman’s paradise. Glenbeigh is a sleepy picturesque village, which is home to a popular sandy beach called Rossbeigh – a great place if you want to stretch your legs while breathing in the invigorating sea air from the Atlantic Ocean.

Back on the N70, and onto the pretty fishing village of Kells, which also boasts its own sandy beach and stunning views of Dingle Bay and the Atlantic.

The town of Caherciveen is the next stop on your travels. This is the main market town on the Ring, so it’s quite a busy spot all year round. This town was the birthplace of Daniel O’Connell, a famous political leader in the early 19th century. The cathedral in the town is dedicated to him – the only one in the country to be named after a lay person.

Also, check out the Barracks, which is a really usual building. It’s said that the plans for this building got mixed up with plans for a barracks in India, as the British had occupation of these two countries at that particular time!

If you are enjoying your adventure so far, we suggest you exit Cahirciveen on the Valentia road (R565) and head west along the peninsula to discover Valentia Island, the remote towns of Portmagee, Ballinskeillgs and the Skellig Islands. This area is a must see if you are looking for somewhere ‘off the beaten track’ as it is less frequented by visitors.

However, if time is against you, continue on your way through Cahirciveen and follow directions for Waterville on the N70.

Waterville is located about half way on the Ring of Kerry, so it’s a good place to stop for lunch. After something to eat, you can wander around this colourful town as many famous people have done before you like, Charlie Chaplin, Walt Disney, Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. There is, in fact, a statue of Charlie Chaplin in the town!

Waterville is also a famous game angling resort, it has an 18 hole championship golf links course (one of the top 20 in the world!) and also a fantastic sandy beach.

As you continue your journey on the N70 from Waterville to Caherdaniel, you will cross over what is called Coomakista Pass. Get your camera ready – park up, and admire the views of the Kenmare River, the Scariff and Deenish Islands.

If it is a nice sunny day, then stop off at Derrynane Beach, considered to be one of the finest beaches in the country! Derrynane House is worth a visit if you are interested in exploring the house that was once home to Daniel O’ Connell.

Next on the itinerary has to be a visit to Staigue Fort, a large stone fort, about 4km off the N70, which is thought to be over 2000 years old! Its exact purpose is still unclear, but it was probably built as a stronghold to protect a local king or lord.

Back on the N70 again and make for the pretty town of Sneem, a popular holiday destination because of its sheer beauty and relaxed atmosphere. The town was once home to the famous ‘Casey Brothers’, world-wrestling champions. The statue on your left as you leave on the N70 for Killarney, is a life size statue of Steve ‘the crusher’ Casey.

Pass through the picturesque villages of Parknasilla and Templenoe and the next town you’ll enter is the heritage town of Kenmare, which is regarded as the “The Jewel on the Ring of Kerry”. Stroll around its charming streets to find out why. It has gourmet restaurants, friendly Irish pubs, craft shops and a whole host of outdoor activities if you want to stick around.

If not, continue north on the N71 for the last leg of the journey. The views you will see on this part of your journey will simply take your breath away. Pull over at Molls Gap viewing park and admire the MacGillycuddy Reeks and the glaciated Black Valley.

Further along the road you will come to ‘Ladies View’, one of the most beautiful views of the three Killarney Lakes and the National Park. It is so called, because when Queen Victoria came to Killarney in 1861, her ladies-in-waiting were overwhelmed by the view they saw from here.

And finally to Killarney, famed the world over, for its unequalled beauty. You could easily spend a day in Killarney exploring its attractions, and you’d still have not seen everything. If you are short on time though, visit Muckross House and Gardens, Ross Castle, Torc Waterfall the National Park.

Wrap up a day of driving with a nice meal in one of Killarney’s many award-winning restaurants, followed by a lively traditional Irish music session in one of the local pubs. The town has a buzzing nightlife scene and a warm and friendly atmosphere. It offers so much to see and do, so it’s easy to see why it is one of Ireland’s best-loved tourist resorts!
