A visit to Zanzibar is not complete without some time to explore Stone Town. Zanzibar Stone Town, or the ‘Old Town’ as the name reads in Swahili, is a real mix of Arabic and African influences and its unique cultural heritage has earned its place as a World Heritage site. Wander through cobbled alleyways, past small shops smelling of spices, making sure you stop and look at the intricately carved doors that adorn many houses. The custom of putting brass knobs on the shutters comes from India, where the knobs were said to prevent elephants from crushing the doors. Since there have been no violent elephants in Zanzibar these are now simply for decoration and to show the wealth of its owner.

Visit a spice farm

Zanzibar is also known as the spice Island and for good reason! The island is home to many spice plantations and at one time in its history, the archipelago produced over 90% of the world’s clove supply.Depending on the season you may taste, see and smell up to 50 different Fruits, Spices and Plants on the Island, so awaken your taste buds!

Sailing on a local dhow

An iconic feature of Zanzibar is the traditional Dhows that dot the coastline. These boats were used by Arab traders to frequent East Africa in the 8th century and are still in use today. Take a day trip on one of these boats, stopping off to snorkel along the way. Lunch is normally a BBQ on the beach of one of the small surrounding islands, perfect!

Visit the giant tortoises of Prison Island

Just three hours away from the mainland you’ll find Prison Island, home to more than a hundred giant tortoises. No one knows exactly how long tortoises have lived on the island, but everyone agrees that they were brought there from outside, most likely from the Seychelles. One theory is that they were left by sailors, since ships often carried tortoises as a source of fresh meat. A hatchery at the tortoise sanctuary on the island also breeds smaller versions of these ancient giants.

Watch the sunset in Nungwi

After a day of sunbathing on the Zanzibar beaches you’re in for a further treat with the Zanzibar sunsets. The Western part of the island is the best place to see the sun setting over the ocean. The town of Nungwi, on the North-West tip of the island is a great place for this and you’ll have some great opportunities with the dhow boats forming a striking silhouette against the sky. Find a hammock, grab yourself a bottle of beer (Kilimanjaro is a personal favourite) say farewell to another day on this beautiful island.

Deep in the heel of the boot of Italy, lays a picturesque little town with miles of olive groves that stretch straight to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Ruvo di Puglia is the heart and soul of some of the most antique and noble olive groves in all of Italy. For extra virgin olive oil of the highest quality, few beat this variety for its flavor and finish.

The province of Puglia in the south of Italy features the Coratina olive. It is this particular variety which has been cultivated for centuries by families of olive growers who respect and perpetuate the traditions of those before them. To understand the uniqueness and integrity of this select specimen, a short tutorial on olive oil seems appropriate.

Rock Crusher

The olive is a drupe, or stone fruit, much like the cherry or the plum. There are about 700 varieties of olives which each express distinctive tastes and aromas, much like grapes which are processed for wine. You may be more familiar with the green or the black types which can be the same olive, just a different degree of ripeness. For oil, they are harvested just as they begin to turn from green to black and preserved and milled quickly in well-aired spaces to minimize the oxidation and enzymatic reactions which can leave unwanted odors and tastes in the oil.

Olive Oil – Italy’s Cold-Pressed Extra Virgin Export

The olives are washed free of any clinging soil before the crushing or “pressing” is begun. One olive contains from 20 – 25% oil, 35 – 50% water and carbohydrates, proteins, organic acids and enzymes. The pressing is done either with millstones or hammers to obtain the paste which is then stirred, pressed or centrifuged to release the juice. This juice is then centrifuged again to separate the actual oil from the water. There are three categories of oil which come from the pressing process: extra virgin, virgin and lampante virgin olive oil. Lampante can only be used after it has been refined. The residue of olive paste or “olive pomace” is left behind at the mill.

Olive oils are given a sensory score which is influenced by the pressing procedure and the times and temperature at which the oil is clarified. To be classified as extra virgin, the olive oil must have an acidity percentage below 1% and receive a trained tester score above or equal to 6.5 out of 9 according to European Union law. The simple processes of pressing, washing, settling, centrifugation and filtration make the oil immediately edible because its sensory, chemical and physical characteristics are perfect.

Once again, extra virgin olive oil can have much the same tastes and bouquets as fine wines. These flavors can be anything from fruity to sweet, bitter, lively or delicate and can emulate almonds or artichokes depending on its origins. Extra virgin olive oil from the Puglia region features a pleasant olive flavor due to the Coratina olive species. This extra virgin olive oil undergoes no chemical treatment, refining or blending but is 100% pure. Unlike some olive oils, this region’s extra virgin olive oil is not overpowering but rich and buttery with hints of fruit and almond flavor and a fine peppery finish. The acidity level of the oil never exceeds 0.5%, the same acidity of mother’s milk.

Most of all, one should consider the health benefits of olive oil, including aiding the growth process, regulation of our metabolism and reducing bad cholesterol. This particular extra virgin olive oil also comes infused with fresh lemons or orange to complement salads, seafood, sauces or even fried foods. There are even advantages to using olive oil to fry food. Because it forms a crust or shell around the food, the oil does not penetrate the inside of the food, allowing it to retain its flavor and texture. In a study at Ankara University in Turkey, investigators found that among oils tested, olive oil fared best over sunflower and soy by retaining nearly 100% of its natural antioxidant defense potential and forming the fewest potentially hazardous by-products.

So when you think about cooking oil, think extra virgin olive oil and reap what you sow!

The Plot: The film begins with a mysterious, disfigured man in a small dark room. While looking out of a small window, he starts pulling these large levers. While doing this, a worm like creature is seen floating in the dark. Then we see Henry floating in the darkness with this worm floating around him. The worm flies away and disappears into some rock formations with a circular opening and strange fluid coming out of it.

The intro to this film, like the rest of the film, can be very hard to watch for most people, but I think everyone should watch this film at least once. Anyway, lets carry with the film plot.

Rock Crusher

Mary X, is Henry’s very strange girlfriend. She rings Henry and invites him round to her parents house for dinner. As soon as Henry gets there, he starts to feel very uneasy. Mary’s mum is acting strange, and Mary’s dad is a complete odd ball with his random and disconnected outbursts. They all sit round for dinner, which happens to be baby chickens. Henry is asked to carve the small chickens, but when he tries, the chickens start to ooze slime while moving their legs up and down. After a few more odd moments Henry is confronted by Mary’s mother who tells Henry that Mary has just had a baby and that he should marry her.

 Eraser Head

Mary and the baby move into Henry’s small small apartment. The baby is very disfigured and maybe not even human at all. The baby is covered in bandages and the only visible part is the face. It looks more like an alien than a human baby. The baby keeps them awake at night with it’s crying and screaming. She decides to abandon Henry and her baby and move out of the flat. Henry is left with the baby which by now, is showing signs of being very sick. Henry starts to have strange encounters with a lady in the radiator. A strange looking woman with puffy cheeks and blonde hair. When he first encounters her, she is doing a dance routine while these small worm like creatures are falling from above her. She smiles at Henry, crushing these worms as she is dancing. His next encounter with the radiator woman, she starts to sing “In heaven everything is fine you’ve got your good things, and I’ve got mine”. You get the feeling that she is trying to reach out to Henry, to help him. I got the feeling that they were soul mates. Henry starts to fall into his own dark nightmare.

This film is truly stunning, and the only one of its kind, and I think that’s why I have a love/hate relationship with Eraser head. The cinematography is amazing with it’s industrial setting and industrial noises. Some of the imagery is horrific, some of it beautiful. The acting is very good too, and all the characters are very believable in their odd little ways.

I don’t class this film as a horror film. Sure, it has it’s moments of shock, but it’s far from horror. I think the film is about a man dealing with his insecurities. Coming to terms with being a father, and being alone and feeling suicidal. He is living the nightmare. His nightmare is what we see around him, the small dark apartment, the window with no view, the sick disfigured baby. It just has a depressing feel about it. If I had insecurities, or felt suicidal, in my mind, my world would reflect Eraser head’s world.

Of course, this is the way I see the film. You might watch it and see it in a completely different way, that’s why the film is so effective. Every time I watch this film, I see something new. I learn a little bit more about Henry, and the world around him. I feel his pain and suffering, his desperation as he tries to live in a world that is filled with our own personal nightmares.

I think there is is a little bit of Henry in all of us. We all have our own nightmares. Some we tell others, and some we keep locked up in our own dark, small apartment.

Ball mills and rod mills are both excellent mining machines for grinding ores into fine powders and particles. However there are some advantages to using rod mills rather than ball mills for larger mining projects including greater efficiency, better grinding performance and lower energy costs. Though ball mills are used more often rod mills can be the better option for specific mining ores and larger site projects.

In a ball mill the actual balls in the machine need to cascade in order for the grinding to be accomplished. Because of this more energy is needed to power up a ball press as opposed to a rod press. Rod mills can be operated at lower peripheral speeds resulting in reduced energy costs. Though this difference in power can vary depending on the type of ore you are grinding the consensus is that a rod machine requires less speed to perform the same function as a ball device.

Rock Crusher

Another key factor in choosing a rod machine over a ball type press is void space. You ideally want as little open space as possible so you have more grinding contact between the rods and the ore. Ball mills need more open space so the balls inside can cascade and grind but this space lessens the contact between metal and ore per surface area. Again, depending on the site project media rods won’t necessarily always be the better option but if you are concerned about void space in your grinding process a rod machine may be the right choice.

Comparing Used Ball Mills Vs Used Rod Mills

If you are working on a mining site dig that is excavating large pieces of rock, coal, copper or other mining media than a rod mill may be a better fit than a ball. Steel rods are more suited to breaking up larger pieces of ore due to the heavier weight of the rods. As well, heavier ore produces more energy per collision which can be better optimized by steel rods rather than balls. If you need to grind mining media down to fine particles than a ball mill is recommended but if the material is large consider a rod mill for the heavy duty grinding.

Are you interested in finding an all inclusive training program that will give you the explosive strength and coiled speed you need to fold your opponents up like a pretzel?

As a wrestler, you understand that you are in the single most intensive and grueling contact sport on the planet and also the one which is most injury prone. Considering that, surely you may be wondering if Kettlebell Training will arm you with the speed, flexibility and power that you can actually apply when you are on the mat and grappling with your opponent.

Rock Crusher

The following information will help you to determine how Kettlebell Training might be just what you have been looking for.

 Kettlebell Training For Wrestlers

Real World Application Makes All the Difference

You know how it is, you are down to the last thirty seconds of the match and one more takedown away from winning. However, your body is worn out and you are saving your last burst of energy for the very end. Are you going to be able to explode into that super double leg or fireman’s carry to send your opponent sprawling to the mat for a strong finish?

Well, one thing is for sure: All of those hours in the gym and out running, swimming or jumping rope mean nothing unless you can use that strength, speed, and stamina when it REALLY counts. Anyone who has done any kind of wrestling: freestyle, Greco Roman or Scholastic style, knows that the muscles you build in the gym can be just about worthless on the mat.

That is, unless you develop a training program which is specifically designed for your application as a wrestler. Sure you could spar with the guy one weight class up all summer and work on developing the strength that you need that way. However, if you are looking for a more convenient method to develop ‘on the mat’ muscles on a consistent basis; you are going to need a more focused and practical option.

The Best of Both Worlds

For years, Kettlebell Training experts have training members of the elite forces of the military, professional fighters like yourself, law enforcement officers, firefighters and other athletes to develop the stamina, agility and raw power that they can specifically apply for their situation.

With Kettlebell Training, these people have found that you can get the best of both worlds when it comes to training for stamina and flexibility as well as speed and power. This is because Kettlebells are lifted and controlled in the same manner that free weights are but they also allow for a much freer range of motion which promotes flexibility and a more well rounded resistance training for strength.

As you know, these are things that make a world of difference when you are on the mat. Whether you need the flexibility and strength to fight your way out of a cradle lock or to seal your opponent up into a bone crushing guillotine, it’s all a matter of applying the right kind of resistance training.

Finding the Best Fit

As you are considering getting started in harnessing the power of Kettlebell Training, it is important to consider your goals as you are looking for a workout to get you the best results. Are you looking to build solid coiled muscles while shrinking down a weight class or are you in a heavier class looking for the raw speed and flexibility that will give you and unfair upper hand?

Determining this will help you to select the best Kettlebell Training program to best fit your desired outcome. For starters, your first Kettlebell set may include a 35lb, 53lb and 70lb kettlebells. This will help you to cover most of your options for strength training and cardio and will be plenty enough to address each muscle group.

The next step is getting a hold of the most specifically tailored program that can deliver you the results you want and help you to avoid time wasting injuries. Fortunately, Kettlebell Training experts have spent years developing programs which can give you just what you are looking for.

A quintessential, lower-New England town, Thomaston, Connecticut, was characterized by its Saint Thomas and First Methodist churches; its single, wind-swept, leave-blanketed Main Street; and the carved, jack-o-lantern faces peering out of the windows of its 19th-century buildings on a blue, but temperature-nipping Halloween weekend.

The red brick Thomaston Station, flanked by small hills whose increasingly thread-bare trees had relinquished their colorful leaves to autumn’s wind, had been fed by a single main track and was located next to the sprawling, equally red-bricked, but now closed Plume and Atwood Brass Mill. They both had a story to tell. Like the life-representing leaves released to history and relegated to memory, the location exuded a rich past, which I eagerly listened to as I awaited the Naugatuck Railroad’s 2:00 p.m. departure. Paradoxically, the silence was the loudest speaker.

Rock Crusher

Originally part of the Farmington Proprietor’s 1684 purchase of Mattatuck Plantation, Thomaston itself had achieved independence in 1739 as the “Northbury Parish,” uniting with the Waterbury Parish in 1780 to form Watertown, but separating almost as quickly and becoming “Plymouth Hollow.”

 The Naugatuck Railroad

Seth Thomas, of timepiece fame, settled in the village in 1813. Expansion intermittently earned it the unofficial name of “Thomas Town” until it was permanently changed to the present “Thomaston” in 1875 to honor the very man who had largely been responsible for its existence.

His factories, now numbering many, churned out watches and mantel and tower clocks, and he was responsible for the Naugatuck Railroad’s routing through town in order for him to be able to link it with the ever-expanding brass center in Waterbury.

Chartered in 1845, the Naugatuck Railroad itself was created to connect Bridgeport in the south with Winsted in the north on Naugatuck River-paralleling track, its initial construction commencing three years later, in April, with service from the just-completed New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad junction to Seymour subsequently inaugurated on May 15, 1849. Extensions to Waterbury followed on June 11 and Winsted on September 24.

The former line, simply designated the “New Haven,” carried more passengers than freight on a route system which, at its peak, encompassed most of New England, stretching from New York to Providence and Boston, and it eventually acquired several other, smaller companies, including the Maine Central and the Boston and Maine. The Naugatuck Railroad was one of them. Initially leasing it on May 24, 1887, it altogether absorbed it 19 years later, in 1906, but passenger service was discontinued on more than half the line, from Waterbury to Torrington and Winsted, in 1958, and five years later the track was completely abandoned between these two cities.

Because of the weakening New England industrial base during the 1960s, which reduced demand for rail services, the New Haven Railroad was forced into a merger with Penn Central in 1969, but further deterioration, due to freight customer loss and track disrepair, resulted in its own bankruptcy. The line north of Waterbury had, by this time, been renamed “Torrington Secondary Track,” after its destination.

Incorporated into the government-created and -sponsored Conrail, the former Penn Central had operated the Waterbury Branch until the Connecticut Department of Transportation had purchased the line between Devon and Torrington in 1982, leasing the track to the Boston and Maine Railroad for its own freight service north of Waterbury. Victim, like so many previous operators, to declining demand and revenue, it discontinued operations in 1995, after it itself had become part of the Guilford Rail System.

On June 7 of that year, the Railroad Museum of New England obtained a state charter for a wholly-owned operating subsidiary designated “Naugatuck Railroad” after the original, 1845 enterprise, leasing track from the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

Outlining its mission, it states, “the Railroad Museum of New England, Inc., is a not-for-profit educational and historical organization founded in January 1968. Its mission is to establish an interpretive facility where the story of the region’s railroad heritage can be effectively told. We have an extensive collection of New England rolling stock, including locomotives of all types, passenger cars, freight cars, and cabooses. We have New England railroad artifacts dating from the 1840s to the present-everything from tickets to signal towers.”

Its Naugatuck Railroad subsidiary, having turned its first wheel in September of 1996, operates historic excursion trains from Thomaston to Waterville throughout the year, including a myriad of seasonal- and holiday-appropriate rides and periodic steam engine runs.

Center of its activities is the Thomaston Station. Replacing the original, smaller, wooden depot located on the other side of the track, the 2,424-square-foot, wooden frame and brick building, with interior plaster walls and ceilings, had been constructed in 1881 by the first Naugatuck Railroad and currently occupies a 1.11-acre site on East Main Street.

After the last passenger train had departed in 1958, it had been used for several purposes: as a freight agent’s office until 1968, as a storage location for the Plume and Atwood Brass Mill, and as a small engine repair shop in the early 1990s. But a vandal-set fire in 1993, spreading from an inside corner and raging up the attic stairs, destroyed the roof.

Monetary donations from the Thomaston Savings Bank permitted roof, chimney, and upper masonry repairs to commence in 1997, followed by interior cleaning, and the installation of a ticket window, gift shop counter, and exhibit panels took place two years later, while a second grant, made in 2001, enabled a new canopy deck to be installed and the original platform canopies to be restored.

A 600-foot-long display track, located behind the building, had been lowered and reconstructed, and today cradled a stationary freight train “pulled” by New Haven diesel locomotives 6690 and 6691, which were attached to a collection of box and tank cars and the prerequisite red caboose numbered C-507. Posing on the spur line, it stood across from the station’s “Baggage Room” door.

The depot, to serve as the cornerstone of an ultimate, 1950s, working railroad station, will be joined by an extended, paved, and lighted platform; an operating control tower; hand-operated crossing gates; a crossing tender’s shanty; a mail crane; a water shed for steam engine servicing; and a hand-operated freight derrick.

The earlier, 1200 noon run, a three-coach collection pulled by diesel locomotive 2203 which somehow reflected the season with its orange and brown livery, screeched to a stop in front of the station at 1330 beneath a gray ceiling and deposited a menagerie of Halloween-costumed kids who promptly stormed the depot door to collect their pumpkins.

Replenished with a second, considerably-costumed group, the train vocally assaulted the silence with its high-shrilled whistle and released its brakes, inching past the station building and the side track-supported freight train as soon as its car couplings had tensed into weight-pulling movement, plunging into the autumnal forest in a southerly direction.

The hills sprouted bursts of burnt orange, glowing gold, auburn, and brown. Protestingly screeching as its wheels adhered to the track’s curves, the short chain of vintage coaches paralleled the almost-black reflective surface of the Naugatuck River, which was periodically highlighted by tiny, silver-sizzled rapids.

Carving out the valley of the same name, the waterway, the largest in Connecticut and a sub-basin of the Housatonic River, spans 39 miles from Norfolk to Derby, passing through the two counties of New Haven and Litchfield and 12 towns in the process. Originally used by the American Indians for sustenance and subsequently serving the English after their own settlement along it, it had facilitated post-Industrial Revolution production in the form of hydropower. Coupled with its paralleling tracks, it had enabled both manufacture and transportation of raw materials and finished products, such as vulcanized rubber, naugahide, brass, and metal clock parts. Today, after considerable revitalization, it provides recreation, fishing, and nature-related activities.

Approaching the south end of town, where the valley narrowed, the train moved under the Reynold’s Bridge, a concrete arch structure carrying Waterbury Road and constructed in the early-1920s. One of the few remaining bridges after the Great Flood of 1955, it marked the location of the small, no-longer existent station of the same name.

Trundling past the WHYCo Factory, the three coaches continued in their southerly direction, momentarily traversing the switch which led to the east side lead track to the new Thomaston Shop. The culmination of seven years of planning and construction, the five-track rail yard and 11,700-square-foot restoration building replaced the previous, 20-foot-long, deck girder bridge facility atop the former power canal one mile from Waterville where proper inspection of a four-axle locomotive had required up to six hours to complete. Tree and bush clearing at the new, two-acre site along the Naugatuck Railroad’s main line began in 1998, followed by prerequisite rock blasting and crushing, drainage, and grading. A 1,000-foot-long roadbed serves as the lead track to the area, built, as is the remainder of the yard’s track and switches, of 107-pound rails. The 65- by 180-foot shop, accessed by four 18-foot-high by 14-foot-wide main doors, is insulated, heated, and lighted for indoor, all-weather use, and two, 131-pound rail tracks run through it. A 60-foot-long, 48-inch-deep inspection pit facilitates under-car inspection and maintenance.

The concrete abutment at the north end of the Thomaston Shop indicates the location of the former Waterbury-Thomaston trolley line, which had crossed both the railroad and the river.

The Jericho Bridge, marking the spot where the flood had significantly altered the landscape, provided river-crossing access into Watertown.

Continuing to bore its way through a virtual tunnel of leaf-clinging trees and bare, skeletal, white and gray limbs, the diesel engine pulled its coaches toward Waterville, momentarily rustling the crunchy, mosaic blankets representing the collected “flesh” of the once foliage-rich trees now lying beside the track in post-life surrender. Like an oil-black mirror, the river reflected the season’s colorful denouement.

The track, reconfigured because of the flood damage, crossed Frost Bridge Road, arcing into a sharp s-curve before entering the town of Waterville over the Chase Bridge.

Threading its way through the Naugatuck Railroad’s Chase Yard, comprised of a motley collection of steam engines and coaches, the train clacked past the sprawling, former Chase Metal Works factory complex at a snail’s pace, south of which was Waterville Station.

The town itself, as evidenced by its large brass mills, had once been sustained by this industry, and was today a sub-section of greater Waterbury itself.

Ceasing motion, the train terminated its southerly, outbound journey, the locomotive disconnecting and passing its coaches on the Huntington Avenue siding before recoupling itself to the former end car.

My own coach, number 4980, had been built in 1924 by Canadian Car Foundry for Canadian National Railways and was typical of the type used for long-distance travel, inclusive of that on New England services operated by Central Vermont and Grand Trunk Railways. Converted in 1969, it served Montreal commuter routes until it had been retired in 1991, at which time it had been acquired by Thomas V. Brown and donated to the Railroad Museum of New England.

Inching away from its southern terminus, my living history excursion train recrossed the town of Waterville, moving past the Chase Metal Works Factory and the coaches lining the rail yard.

The silver rails ahead seemed to slice through the dense forest. The hills, as if torched, flamed orange, gold, and chestnut, the restored cars resettling into rhythmic, lateral rocks as their wheels screamed at every curve and track imperfection.

The Thomaston Station, soon moving by on the left side, quickly yielded to the red brick Plume and Atwood factory across the road.

Tracing its roots to the brass mill the Thomas Manufacturing Company had organized in 1854 to roll metal for clock movements, it had been known as “Holmes, Booth, and Atwood” when this concern had purchased it in 1869, adopting the “Plume and Atwood” name two years later. Incorporated in 1880, it had produced a comprehensive line of lamps, lamp trimmings, gas burners, and brass lamp parts, becoming one of the railroad’s major freight customers for more than a century-the railroad itself thus complementing and facilitating Thomaston’s very purpose. It had been the center of Plume and Atwood’s Waterbury-relocated manufacturing division and main office.

Dorset-Rex had acquired the plant in the late-1950s, but the Hurricane Diane flood had severely damaged its tooling, equipment, and buildings.

Climbing a considerable grade, the diesel engine pulled its cars between some tall rock faces, following the left-curving track past green pine and conifer to the face of Thomaston Dam, plying the eight miles of rail between Thomaston and Litchfield laid as a result of the flood. Part of a network of flood control dams constructed by the US Army Corps of Engineers in the Naugatuck Valley Basin, the million project, completed in 1960, had been integral to the town’s recovery after six inches of rain had caused the river to overflow and its banks to collapse. The dam itself prevented further downstream damage.

The first train to ply the new route had been a 28-car-long freight service operated by the New Haven Railroad and pulled by Alco RS-3 diesel locomotives 561 and 533, destined for Torrington and Winsted.

Pushed by its engine, my own train slowly negotiated the track past the rock faces; the abandoned, Plume and Atwood Brass Mill; and over the road crossing in the reverse direction, ceasing motion with a gentle screech from its brakes in front of the Thomaston Station and ending its 20-mile excursion.

Descending the three steps to the platform, the adults emerged from their scenic and historic ride. Descending the same steps, the Halloween-costumed kids emerged from theirs.

Playing chords on your electric guitar is quite different from an acoustic, especially when using distortion. To get the best sound out of your distorted guitar it is best to substitute standard open electric guitar chords with bar chords, power chords and simple triads. The aim of this article is to discuss the different electric guitar chords that sound really cool with distortion.

The first electric guitar chords you should use with distortion are bar chords. A bar chord gets it name due to the fact that the first finger will lay across the fret board covering all of the strings. To make a simple bar chord first look at how you would play an open E major chord. Now move that same fingering for an E major chord up the neck one fret and use your index finger to bar all the strings on the first fret. The advantage of using bar chords is that you can easily move this same pattern up and down the neck. Bar chords sound great on an electric guitar because you can easily keep any unwanted strings from ringing and causing feedback.

Rock Crusher

Some more electric guitar chords you may find useful are power chords. Power chords are made up of just two notes. Usually the a root note and a fifth. If you are a fan of Metallica then you will love power chords. Almost all of their earlier songs are played using these electric guitar chords. An example of a power chord would be to play the 6th string 5th fret and the 5th string 7th fret together at the same time. These two notes make up an A5 power chord. This same pattern can be moved anywhere on the neck. Try it you’ll see what I mean.

Electric Guitar Chords – Secrets to Playing Rhythm Guitar Revealed

Lastly, you can play triads, or three note electric guitar chords. Triads can be made up of the root, third and fifth, however many guitar players like to omit the fifth and use the seventh chord tone because it generally gives a more unique sound. A good example of a band who utilizes a lot of triads in their electric guitar chords is Opeth.

All three of the electric guitar chords above sound great with heavy or light amounts of distortion. Bar chords help stifle unwanted feed back and noise while power chords and triads are simple chords shapes that have a clean crisp presence. The electric guitar can be a completely different monster than the acoustic so take advantage of the electric guitar chords mentioned above to make up your own brutal riffs.

Homo sapiens Neanderthal lived between 130,000 and 35,000 years ago. Europe was the center of their range. Some have been found as far south as Gibraltar, even down to Israel and the Near East. They were bordered on the north by glaciers, on the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and on the west by the Atlantic Ocean.

Height: Average around 5 foot 8 inches.

Rock Crusher

Fossils: Part of a skeleton – a thick skull cap and a number of arm and leg bones were uncovered in the Neander Valley near Düsseldorf, Germany. Two more skeletons were found in a cave in Spy, Belgium.

Are You Related To A Neanderthal?

Brain capacity: Neanderthal’s brain on average was slightly larger than our own. However, everything about them was big. Proportionally, their brain was roughly equivalent to modern humans.

During the 19th century, authorities commonly dismissed neanderthal as a “primitive brute,” much too odd to be an ancestor of mankind. Over the years conventional wisdom changed. The popular cliché became: Dress a neanderthal in a suit and he could go unnoticed through the streets of New York City. Perhaps he would be a bit shorter than average; maybe his features would be a little on the heavy side. Squatter? Yes. More muscular than most? Yes, indeed. But on the whole, he would blend in nicely.

Opinions have changed again on this sub-species. Paleontologists now believe neanderthal was a very distinct group designed for cold weather with their stout, pear-shaped bodies which reduced the lost of heat.

Their physique is completely opposite that of the rather slender Homo erectus, who was much more at home in the warmer climates. Surprisingly enough, neanderthal is also strikingly different from early modern Homo sapien sapiens who lived during the same period.

Artists have had a field day with neanderthals. At times, they have been presented as primitive ape types; other times they resembled modern humans. It depended on the whim of the artist and the audience he wished to please.

The truth is no one knows what neanderthals looked like; nor for that matter, what Homo erectus looked like; nor Homo habilis; nor the australopithecines either. Fleshy parts have not been preserved. Leaving portraits aside, however, we do know quite a few facts about neanderthal.

They were a formidable sub-species. We find sizable skeletons with thick arm and leg bones and good evidence of the muscle power which moved them. Their limbs and joints were bigger, thicker, and more durable than Homo sapien bones.

Granted, those features might not draw much attention in a crowd today, but they had other characteristics which would stand out as — different. The hip sockets face sideways rather than forward. That feature suggests neanderthal neither walked nor stood like a modern sapien.

It’s hard to confuse a neanderthal face with a sapien, erectus, habilis or anything else. Their jaws and nose protrude, and the noses are huge. Don Johanson tells us that the nose stuck out almost perpendicular to the rest of the face. Their heads are long and narrow with a bulge in the occipital region, commonly called a “bun”; prominent brow ridges over high, round eye sockets (Cro-Magnon’s sockets were low and square); swept back cheekbones; and no bony chin.

Those are distinctions with a difference, but here is an oddity. We use our molars for crushing food, but evidently neanderthal didn’t chew like us. His front teeth are the ones with larger crowns and roots compared to his other teeth. These front teeth are often eroded down to the roots in adult neanderthals. Researchers conclude neanderthal used his front teeth for chewing.

Paleontologists have listed quite a few interesting facts about Homo sapien neanderthal. Their tool production, which paleontologists label the Mousterian or Middle Stone Age, remained unchanged for their entire 100,000 year life span. It is seen as a technological advancement over Homo erectus’ Acheulian industry.

Johanson points out that neanderthal produced different flint tools for different purposes: “such as meat cutting, hide scraping, and woodworking.” Authorities think that they, like erectus, consumed quite a bit of meat. Some stone points may have been fitted onto a wooden shaft and used as a spear. Impact fractures suggest their use as projectiles.

Judging by the numerous hearths in their caves, apparently, neanderthal had learned the art of making fire. Fire pits were found where they had roasted meat and wild peas. Paleontologists see signs of long term illnesses and injury in a number of neanderthal skeletons. That, they say, is ample proof this sub-species took care of each other when the need arose. And neanderthals buried their dead. Inside of several of their caves, we have uncovered neanderthal skeletons buried in flexed positions.

Did they speak? In Israel at a cave called Kebara, a 60,0000 year old almost complete skeleton was uncovered. Among the bones was found a U-shaped hyoid bone which is very much like our own hyoid. That finding may indicate neanderthals were capable of speech.

The hyoid bone anchors muscles that connect to both the larynx and the tongue. The hyoid is an important part of our physical anatomy which allows speech. Still, it’s a matter of debate among the experts whether neanderthal had a language.

The question remains: Who were the ancestors of neanderthal? And was this sub-species one of the direct ancestors of Homo sapien sapiens? Or were they merely another dead end species? As for the first question, the fossil record has no answer.

It is a puzzle. Homo erectus was around before them, but they were dramatically at odds in physique. The “handy man” Homo habilis supposably was extinct hundreds of thousands of years before neanderthal arrived on the scene. Besides, physically, habilis was even more distant from neanderthal than erectus. Consequently, neanderthals have no clear predecessors.

What about their descendents? Therein lies a deep split among the prehistory scholars. The ones who argue against neanderthal’s inclusion in our ancestry seem to have the upper hand in the dispute.

Modern people do not share neanderthal’s distinctive traits of a narrow-shaped head with protruding jaws and a perpendicular nose, no chin, and a bun on the back of the skull. We don’t chew with our incisor teeth, and our hip sockets face forward rather than veering toward the side.

Since people today don’t have those traits, we suspect they died along with neanderthal. Moreover, since perfectly normal-looking sapiens were already present during neanderthal’s period, it’s reasonable to conclude – they, not neanderthal, were our ancestors.

The degree of anatomical differences between modern humans and neanderthal has prompted some to question neanderthal’s classification as a sub-species with sapiens. Paleontologist Yoel Rak believes neanderthal is a separate species. Rak claims that the differences between neanderthal and sapiens are greater than those found in chimpanzees, which are divided into separate species, and in hyenas which are even given separate genena.

Species is commonly defined as groups of interbreeding natural populations that are reproductively isolated from other such groups. Considering that neanderthals unique traits are no longer with us, evidently sapiens were not interbreeding with neanderthals. Rak and other conclude we are looking at a separate species.

Then what can we make of neanderthal? Here we find a creature with a brain as large or larger than our own, walking around on two feet. We find evidence that they hunted, knew the art of starting a fire, cooked meat and vegetables, helped their sick and invalid, and buried their dead. Sounds very human, doesn’t it? But yet, something is missing. A major piece of the puzzle doesn’t quite fit.

Homo sapien neanderthal, we find, is an enigma, just as Homo erectus was before it. Both were stuck in a rut. Although erectus lived over one, perhaps two million years and spread over three continents, his Acheulian stone culture remained what it was. It varied little from place to place and didn’t improve at all over time. From this and some speculation about lack of breath control, paleontologists decided erectus couldn’t speak. If they were exchanging ideas on their stone techniques, we should expect some improvement over a couple of million years.

While it is true neanderthal wasn’t around nearly as long as erectus, still 100,000 years is a very long time to go without advances in their Mousterian stone kit. If neanderthal’s hyoid allowed him speech, his lack of progress becomes all the more difficult to explain.

Unlike erectus with its mere 850 to 900 c.c brain capacity, we cannot dismiss neanderthal’s lack of innovation due to a small brain. Evidently, there is more to being a human than just quantity of brains.

How does neanderthal fit into evolution? It doesn’t; it’s another dead end. This group appears suddenly without any known ancestors and leaves no obvious descendants. The experts don’t even agree on how they should classify neanderthal.
